Gearbox Noise Diagnosis Guide

Gearboxes talk before they fail. The noise — its pitch, when it happens, whether it follows speed or load — is a diagnostic language, and learning a few words of it can be the difference between a bearing job and a box full of scrap. This is the translation our Fontana gear shop uses daily.

The common vocabulary

A whine that rises with speed usually means gear tooth wear or a bearing beginning to fail — the mesh is no longer clean. Grinding is later-stage: teeth or bearing elements physically damaged, and every revolution spreads the damage. A clunk on load changes points at backlash — worn teeth, worn splines or a loose coupling taking up slack. A low hum or rumble that you feel as much as hear is typically a bearing race deteriorating.

What to do, and when

Any new gearbox noise earns an oil check first: level, condition, and metal on the magnet or in the drained oil tell you how far things have gone — glitter means wear in progress, chunks mean stop now. Continued operation with a failing bearing is how a rebuildable box becomes an unbuildable one.

Bring the box, or bring the machine: inspection and the quote are free, documented with photos, at our Fontana shop. Regular hours Monday–Friday 6 AM–5 PM; the rush line runs 24 hours a day.

  • Whine rising with speed: gear wear or early bearing failure
  • Grinding: active tooth or bearing destruction — stop and inspect
  • Clunk on direction change: backlash — teeth, splines or coupling
  • Rumble you can feel: bearing race failure developing
  • Metal chunks in oil: internal damage already done — do not run it

Frequently asked questions

My gearbox just started whining. How urgent is it?

Urgent enough to inspect promptly. Early whine is often a bearing — caught now it is a rebuild; run to failure it can take the gears and housing with it.

Can I check anything myself first?

Oil level and condition, and the drain magnet. Metal evidence plus noise means the next step is a bench inspection, not more running.
